I went to the BF’s parents' house for Easter. I love Easter and all the sugary celebrations it brings. But between the courses of cakes and brownies I was introduced to a regional favorite: Tewksbury Tweets.
With a cultish following, these no-bake cookies are a yummy cluster of oatmeal, chocolate and peanut butter. According to what I was told in my introduction, they were/are served in public-school cafeterias around Tewksbury, MA. Just imagine a plop of fudge with texture.
I hunted down the recipe- super easy! No bake!
Ingredients
2 cups sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 stick butter
1/2 cup milk
1 cup peanut butter
1 tablespoon vanilla
3 cups oatmeal
Waxed paper
Directions
In a heavy saucepan bring to a boil, the sugar, cocoa, butter and milk. Let boil for 1 minute then add peanut butter, vanilla and oatmeal. On a sheet of waxed paper, drop mixture by the teaspoonfuls, until cooled and hardened.

Being born and raised in Tewksbury, I can vouch for these definitely being a TREAT.... YUUUUMMMMMYYYYY!!!!
ReplyDeleteAs another Tewksbury alumni -- these were actually used as bargaining chips during lunch. The best damn treat you'll eat!
ReplyDeleteYup, the best cookies ever...every time they were on the munu, I got TWO lunches just so I could have two cookies!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Tewksbury Tweets but I remember them having raisins in them. I'm I correct or mistaken?
ReplyDeleteYes I remember raisins!
DeleteExcellent recipe I think I'd prepare it next time because I'm a lover of sweet things specially when it is something delicious!m10m
ReplyDeleteNorth Street School lunch lady made them the best!
ReplyDeleteAhhh North Street School and Foster School
Deletecool
ReplyDeletethey definitely had raisins!!
ReplyDeleteThis is NOT the receipe that I grew up on. The original recipe has raisins and more rolled oats than this. If they are made right, they shouldn't taste like "a plop of fudge with texture".
ReplyDeleteOriginal recipe doesn't have raisins
DeleteOriginal recipe from a school cookbook from the 1970's. Enjoy!
ReplyDelete3 cups sugar
3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup milk
3/4 teasp salt
1/2 cup + 1 tbsp cocoa
3/4 cup of peanut butter
3/4 cup of raisins
4 1/2 cups of rolled oats (Quaker Oatmeal, not instant)
1/2 teasp vanilla
Soak the raisins in warm water till they plump (15 min), drain really well.
Combine the first 5 ingredients and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add peanut butter, vanilla, raisins and oats. Mix well.
Drop onto a sheet of waxed paper and let stand until they are firm. Refrigerate.
Then eat 5 or 6 and you'll feel like you are back in school!!
I am a 1979 grad and this is the delicious tweet I recall with great fondness!
